What Happens to Your Body When You Hit the Snooze Button

When you hit the snooze button, some important things happen in your brain chemically that actually have a very large effect on the rest of your day.

what most people don’t know is that this starts night before because what a lot of people do is they’ll be on their laptop, smartphone, tv and so on..  since our brain didn’t evolve for iPhone or other technology devices, blue light comes out of your screen will tell your brain not to sleep yet.

Our brain evolved when there was just the sun and moon so having blue light when you’re trying to sleep tells your brain that it’s not yet time to go to bed.

Have you ever laid in your bed and you feel like you’re not tired at all but next morning you’re exhausted..? Often times it’s because of the blue light and using your phone and laptop within 60 minutes of going to bed.

Let’s get into the details exactly why hitting snooze on your alarm actually screws up your energy and how you feel for the rest of the day.

How deep sleep work is REM, which stands for rapid eye movement. When you’re in REM, your eyes  are moving all around. It’s creepy, but cool thing about REM is that most of us sleep with REM cycles about 2 or 3 a night and and after about 2 or 3 cycles, our body tells us that it’s time to wake up.  So people who wake up naturally and feeling rested is because after 2 or 3 cycles, their brain just naturally wakes up its their routine and it’s called circadian rhythm.

Some people who wakes up at the same time every single day with no alarm, they wake up feeling well-rested while there are people who hit the snooze button.

When you hit the snooze button, it means that you’re telling your brain to start another REM cycle and when you try to wake up 15 minutes after which is in middle of REM cycle, your brain is now just all thrown out of whack and you feel exhausted. It’s called sleep inertia.

Also it’s been proven that it takes up to 4 hours to take yourself out of that sleep inertia state. When you’re in that 4 hours try to wake your brain up, you have less comprehension and you are less productive than when you’re not in that state.

So the solution to feel more energized throughout the day is to take an ice cold shower. It’s what Tony Robinson does in his morning routine and it’s called shocking your nervous system. 

When you take an ice cold shower, it shocks your nervous system and it get run so much adrenalin pumping in your blood and it tells your brain to wake up even if it’s in middle of REM cycle.

The thing you want to remember to spend productive and energetic day is not to use devices 60 minutes before you sleep. Keep that in mind let’s have healthier lifestyle!
